I've chosen my third idea for my final project, but with some revisions.
I intend to complete these goals with my project...
1- Choose 3 songs that I get a strong visual sense for
2-For each song, create a video to accurately illustrate what I saw when I listened to the music. (There will be no music from the original song included in the video)
3- Take the music inspired videos and ask people what genre of music they think the videos portray
4- Take the video and try to create a type of music inspired by the images in the video
I've been listening to plenty of music to try and find some songs that really inspire my imagination. I intend to use three different types of genres in my project. I've been writing down the feelings I get while listening to some of the songs, I think writing down how I feel will help create a mood for the images I capture.
GAMEPLAN
Choose the final three songs
For each song:
Listen to the song and write down the emotions I feel, the color palette I would imagine to go along with the music, take note of what instruments are used and what can visually illustrate the sounds the instruments create.
Sketch some images I would like to see in the video, create a story board.
Think of a way to execute the images I sketched. (Where? When? How?)
Record the images
Use iMovie to put the images together
Survey people and ask them what genre they think each video was

Final Project-- Ideas
IDEA ONE: My first idea is to take several songs and assign colors and shapes to the instrumentation in them, and having other people try and assign colors and shapes to the same songs as well, and then documenting this information in some way. For example- I would consider a loud bass pitch to be a dark blue, maybe with large waves of circles. I would also consider assigning an overall color palette to a song. For example a rock song may include complementary colors that cause visual vibrations and create an effect of noise, while an R&B song would be a calmer palette of blue and violets.
IDEA TWO: My second idea is to combine the narrative, simultaneity, and stop motion animation assignments we did earlier this semester. I would use stop motion animation to create a narrative of 2 or 3 different point of views in a narrative that would all combine in the end. To translate between the different views I would change the color in the background of each different view. For example one view would have a yellow background, one would have a blue background, and one would have a red background. The three different points of view will ultimately arrive at a similar conclusion.
IDEA THREE: My last idea is to illustrate music through a video montage. I would listen several pieces of music or sounds and then videotape scenes that I think go well with the sounds I am hearing in an attempt to illustrate the music. However, in the final video, I won't use any music, just sounds I recorded along with the video to try and illustrate the music. I will then ask people what genre they think the video is and document that information.
Some songs I have considered using are:
Champagne Supernova- Oasis
The Adventure- Angels & Airwaves
Virtual Insanity- Jamiroquai
Jimmy Eat World- Sweetness
Stay With You- John Legend
As I Am (Intro)- Alicia Keys

Performance Art
Alyssa Buono & Anna Rettberg
For our interaction study, we decided to stand outside and paint leaves whatever colors we wished and taped them to a tree. We involved other people by asking them to help us put leaves back on the tree, since they had died and fallen off. We allowed the people to choose whichever color they preferred to paint the leaf with. By the end we had several people help us, but because it was so cold, not many people were interested in helping out.

Assignment One
The Paths of Boland Floor One

Date: Monday September 1, 2008
Time: 7:00 pm- 8:30 pm
For the time period I kept track of people passing through the elevator lobby of Boland Floor One. I kept track of 1) the time that they passed through the lobby. 2) their gender. 3) where they were going. 4) where they were coming from.
This was an interesting project to do. Prior to the project I never really saw many people from my floor walking around. However, within the hour and a half that I sat in the lobby I had a total of 54 people pass me. Most people on the floor were headed to similar places (either their dorm rooms, the dining hall, the trash room, or the bathroom) but their were also some random places as well (Niagra Falls, NYS Fair).
I asked every person the same question "Where are you going to? -and- Where are you coming from?" and it was interesting to see how different people responded. Some went into great detail while answering the questions while others gave quick one word answers.
